IELTS General Writing Task 1 with model answer

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

You are having problems with a neighbours animals because the fence between your
properties is old and in poor repair. You want the neighbour to pay half the cost of
building a new fence.

Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter
• say what the problems are
• explain how a new fence will solve the problems
• suggest that the neighbour pays half of the cost

Write at least 150 words.

Model Answer:

Dear Mr. Adams,
My name is Paul and I am your next door neighbour. I am writing this letter to express my concern about your pet dogs who are quite unfriendly and hostile in nature.

To begin with, the dogs are particularly aggressive and bark at bystanders incessantly. Recently my children were playing in the backyard of our house when the dogs tried to intimidate them.Thanks to the fence in between, my children could manage to get back home safely.

In light of the above incident, I think it is important for us to address the poor condition of the fence.The fence is in desperate need of repair. I propose that a new iron fence be erected that can act as an effective barrier to keep everybody safe , including the dogs.

Finally, I would suggest that we split the new fence and associated installation cost of the new fence, as the fence would be beneficial for both the families.Good quality iron fence is expensive but it will pinch less if we both share the cost.
