More and more people are relying on the private car as their major means of transportation, Describe some of the problems over reliance on cars can cause, and suggest at least one possible solution.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Model Answer:

Over the last half century, the pace of change in the life of human beings has increased beyond our wildest expectations. This change has been driven by the booming breakthrough in technology and science that resulted in significant changes in the methods of transportation. Private cars, as fundamental part of this era have been thought to be a contentious issue because of the problems caused by their dependence. Consequently, it is important to look for ways to tackle these problems.

Firstly, the number of private cars skyrocketed in most of the countries resulting in the growth of traffic congestion and traffic jams especially during the rush hours. For example, a recent study conducted in London has shown that the number of traffic jams almost doubled in the last year due to increased number of private motor vehicles. In addition, the prospects of air pollution caused by the increasing number of motor vehicles are quite alarming, especially, in big cities such as Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt. Furthermore, people's preference to use private cars even for short distances significantly reduces the time they walk everyday. Therefore, this will have negative impacts on their fitness and their public health.

On the other hand, some steps could be taken to solve this problem. To begin with, the government should allocate a substantial part of its annual budget to improving methods of public transportation , constructing new roads and maintaining the old ones. For instance, a recent statistics published in Canada has revealed that improvement of public transportation such as buses and trains considerably decreased the traffic jams created on the road by almost 25%. Moreover, higher taxes can be added to petrol and gas sales to private car owners. This will result in a reduction in the use of private vehicles.

To sum up, it can be clearly seen that the use of private cars has become a necessity in our modern lifestyle. However, it is important to control our reliance on them. I recommend confronting the problem of over reliance on cars by specific national publicity campaigns as well as public education.
