Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

One of the highly controversial issues today relates to whether the amount of time people spend online is destroying their social life or that it is expanding their communication scope to horizons they have never reached before. I partially agree with the latter view due to several reasons that I will discuss in greater detail in my essay.

On one side of the argument there are people who argue that the disadvantages of excessively using the Internet considerably outweigh its advantages. The main reason for believing this is that, nowadays the lack of human social interactions is becoming a norm. People are increasingly engaged online to such a degree that they no longer gather, for example, around dinners. This is in contrast to what they used to do a decade ago. It is also possible to say that the increasing availability of smartphones and Internet plans have made it very difficult for people to abandon their smartphones. One good illustration of this is the number of Facebook users is about to exceed 2 billion users. Therefore, it is easy to see why this argument has gained support.

On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case. It is often argued that the Internet has provided people with unprecedented access to information and innovative ways to communicate together, albeit, from the comfort of their homes. A second point is that students, today, largely depend on the Internet for their research and study. A particularly good example here is that many schools are requesting students to use their computers to do their homework online. Thus, it goes without saying that this viewpoint is credible and realistic too.

Having considered a range of arguments, I have drawn the conclusion that, although using the Internet may have its drawbacks such as affecting social relations, its downside is outweighed by the significant benefits of expanding the global scope of communication.
