Model Answer:
One of the highly controversial issues today relates to whether it is appropriate for researchers to use animals in their tests or that they should abstain from using animals. I agree with the former opinion due to several reasons that I will discuss in greater detail in my essay.
On one side of the argument there are people who argue that experimenting with animals is absolutely cruel and unethical. The main reason for believing this is that these animals are usually kept in captivity, and in many instances, could die during these experiments. One good illustration of this is the number of frogs dissected by botany students during the course of their study. Therefore, it is easy to see why this argument has gained support.
On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case. It is often argued that much of the scientific breakthroughs in medicine , such as treatment of cancers and chronic diseases have been as a result of extensive researches which included animal testing. A second point is that animal testing need not always result in the demise of the animal and may not necessarily inflict pain or suffering on them. A particularly good example here is the discovery of the use of titanium in dental implants while experimenting on rabbits. Thus, it goes without saying that this viewpoint is credible and realistic too.
Having considered a range of arguments, I have drawn the conclusion that the advantages of experimenting with animals far outweigh the drawbacks. Therefore, I agree with this opinion for the greater good it holds.
