Model Answer:
The pie charts demonstrate the units of electricity produced by various forms of natural and industrial energy sources in two countries in 1980 and 2000.
Firstly, in 1980 coal was the main energy source used to produce 50 units of electricity in Australia, and the remaining 50 units were provided by oil, natural gas, and hydro power. In France, however coal provided energy for almost 25 units (27%) only and interestingly, nuclear energy provided 15 units while the remaining 50 units were provided by the remaining/ other energy sources. Secondly, in Australia, in 2000 the picture was quite different, with coal taking over almost 76% (130 units) of energy source. No nuclear power was used to produce any of the remaining units of electricity. In France, however, there was a dramatic increase in the use of nuclear energy which contributed to 70% (126) of the units produced. Coal and oil were used equally to produce 25 units of electricity each, while natural gas and hydropower were also used equally to produce 2 units each.
In summary, there were remarkable variations in the use of energy sources in Australia and France in 1980 and 2000. Australia used a great deal more coal to produce electricity units while France used nuclear energy more heavily.
