The argument states that there has been a rise in the purchase of unnecessary items by people. In the era where online shopping and social media are accessible to wider range of population and people spend a lot of their times on such platforms, a perfect ground is laid for the sellers to showcase their products to wider range of audience. In my opinion buying products which are not needed is a positive trend.

Now-a-days people spend more time on their mobile phones than on television. With the advancement of technology, everyday new products are launched into the market and Social media platforms such as instagram, facebook, news apps, and youtube have popup ads where various products are advertised. These ads highlight the improvements in the new product which results in people wanting to purchase the product. Online shopping apps such as amazon and flipkart use various techniques such as discounts, shopping festivals, or mentioning that only few pieces remaining to create a sense of urgency in buyers to purchase the product. For example – Apple launches Iphone every year and soon after we see those hyped-up ads on youtube. We start comparing it with the product which we have and start finding the reasons to buy the new Iphone. One more reason is people think that buying a certain item will give them happiness, the happiness doesn’t last for long and people get bored of their purchased thing.

So as long as their is growth of social media and online shopping, people will continue to buy unnecessary products. Before buying people must assess whether they really need the product or is it that their minds are being tricked.
