'Telecommuting' refers to workers doing their jobs from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. Telecommuting is growing in many countries and is expected to be common for most office workers in the coming decades.

How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting?

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Telecommuting, also widely known as work from home, is a popular work practice and is a growing trend in companies across the world. This essay will discuss the various effects on society due to growth of work from home practice.    

There are numerous benefits of telecommuting on society. First of all, work from home policy aids in reduction of vehicular traffic during office hours. Not only such practice reduces pollution but also increases productivity among employees. For example, India’s silicon valley capital, Bangalore, is notorious for traffic congestions during office hours. A survey shows that information technology companies that have adapted work from home policy, have seen increase in productivity levels. Since employees do not have to waste time in traffic jams, they use the freed up time to work more. Also, such employees have reduced stress levels.

Secondly, work from home is a big boon for single parents and working mothers. Instead of relying on daycare facilities for children, parents can take care of their children and be productive at work at the same time. A recent survey shows that, working mothers who work remotely, worry less about their children and are more productive at work due to reduced stress levels. The same survey also highlights the increased representation of women in companies where telecommuting is more prevalent. This helps companies kill two birds with one stone ;  Telecommuting  increases diversity on the work floor and boosts overall productivity.  Thus there are various positive effects of telecommuting on society.

Having considered a range of arguments, I have drawn the conclusion that growth of telecommuting has an overall positive effect on society. From cleaner environment to workforce diversity, the benefits of work from home are manifold.
