Model Answer:

The table provides information about the percentage of secondary school students in specialist, grammar, voluntary-controlled and community schools in three selected years 2000, 2005 and 2009. It can be clearly seen that three out of four secondary schools had decreasing levels of attendance rate. The exception was community schools, in which its attendance figure rose markedly throughout the period shown.

In 2000, more than half of the secondary students attended voluntary-controlled school at 52%. Grammar school was the second highest attendance for secondary pupils. Both specialist and community schools accounted for 12 % of student attendance rate each, the lowest proportions for that year. In the subsequent five years, pupil attendance rate at voluntary-controlled schools fell by 14% to 38%. In contrast, attendance figure for community schools increased almost three folds to 32%.

By 2009, 58% of the secondary students attended community schools, whereas voluntary-controlled schools attendance rate declined further to 20%. The remaining secondary pupils chose to attend specialist and grammar schools where attendance figures stood at 10% and 12% respectively.
