Model Answer:
The bar chart compares six different geographical regions in terms of the proportion of illiteracy rate in both males and females in 2000. It can be clearly seen that there were more uneducated females and males in all regions. Among the compared regions, developed countries had the least illiterate men and women.
Three developing regions had the highest percentages of uneducated females, namely South Asia, Arab States and Sub-Saharan Africa, with figures stood high at 57 %, 51 % and 48% respectively. Percentages of uneducated males in these regions were also way higher than those in other regions with close of 30% of the males unable to read or write.
By contrast, figures for uneducated women were significantly lower in East Asia or Oceania and Latina America or Caribbean. However, while the proportion of illiterate men and women in Latin America or Caribbean region was fairly similar at around 10%, the figure for uneducated females in East Asia or Oceania was twice higher than its male counterparts, at 20%. Finally, developed countries had the most educated population with illiteracy rates for both genders stood low at less than 3%.
