IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

Fresh water has always been a limited resource in some parts of the world. Today, however, growing worldwide demand has made this a global problem. What are the causes of the increased demand and what measure could governments and individuals take to respond to this problem?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Water scarcity is a growing concern in numerous countries, including some developed nations. Owing to the human and natural causes, demand for potable water is increasing. However, the joint effort of government and citizens would certainly mitigate this threatening problem.

To begin with, there are several reasons for water crisis. Firstly, on account of altered weather patterns, particularly arid climate, the countries such as India and Africa are encountering a shortages of drinking water. Secondly, the mushrooming of industries consumes enormous amount of water source and the wastage further pollutes fresh ground water. Finally, overpopulation has certainly skyrocketed the demand of water manifold. Also, although not a major cause, but careless attitude of people and overuse of household water has exacerbated this condition.

However, the solutions are available to tackle this issue. First of all, the government should initiate and strengthen the water saving systems such as collecting water in dams and reservoirs and reviving old ponds and lakes. For instance, a recent drought in India has alerted the government to renovate multitudes of water bodies. Secondly, despite being an expensive method, desalination and recycling of wastewater would definitely meet the water requirements of the world to a greater extent. A good illustration is Singapore, where the authorities effectively implement these means to produce fresh water.

On top of it, individuals' efforts in conservation of water resource by constructing rain water harvesting tank at home and avoiding lavish utilisation of water for household use would surely yield the desired outcomes.

The points I have hitherto considered lead to the inevitable conclusion that even though water shortage is an emerging global issue, mainly caused by urbanisation and overpopulation, various means and methods such as proper conservation and recycling can prevent this from worsening.
