IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Forests are the lungs of the earth. Destruction of the world's forests amounts to death of the world we currently know. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

One of the highly controversial issues today relates to the alarming rates of deforestation. This has led many people to consider the forest as synonymous with the mammalian lungs and express their worries regarding its imminent demise. I strongly agree with this view due to several reasons that I will discuss in greater detail in my essay.

On one side of argument there are people who argue that deforestation is not a real concern. The main reason for believing this is that the impact of deforestation on people's daily life is obscure. It is also possible to say that the global rise in population requires that more forests are cleared for the benefit of raising new cities to accommodate more people. One good illustration of this is the increased rate of deforestation in the Amazon forests. Therefore, it is easy to see why this argument has gained support.

On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case. It is argued that deforestation is a key factor in the global climate change. A second point is that destruction of forests will definitely disturb the ecological balance of the Earth. A particularly good example here, are the numerous studies that concluded that Earth temperature is expected to rise by 3 degrees centigrade in the next 50 years. Thus, it goes without saying that this view point is credible and realistic too.

Having considered a range of arguments, I have drawn the conclusion that deforestation is a real threat, and I personally believe that if we do not begin to tackle this issue, the consequence will be detrimental.
