IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Some people believe teaching kids at home is  best for development while others believe that going to school is more important. Discuss the positive and negative  effect and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Education is the key to a child's success. There are many philosophies on the best way to develop and educate the future generations. While many parents choose to send their young to schools, there is ample evidence to suggest that home learners can be more successful. In this essay, I will analyse these issues using examples to demonstrate why I believe home education is the way forward.

Many parents feel that schools are the best places for their children to excel. There are a number of advantages to attending school. Firstly, there are many opportunities to develop social skills. Classes typically have up to fifteen students each. Because of the many children in one location they will be in close contact. As a result, pupils must learn how to interact with each other. Also, it is easier  for school students to enroll in universities. This is because the learning standards are in line with national expectations and entry requirements. Teachers are also very experienced in helping students with application forms.

Despite these, home education is a superior way of feeding a child's mind. Firstly, the pace of learning is tailored to the child's ability. This does not happen in school classes. A recent UK school report demonstrated that fifty percent of overachievers do not meet their full potential in school because of class numbers. As a result of the tailored experience, home education allows a student to excel at the pace that is best for them. Another benefit is that the teaching in home education will cushion a child from negative social interactions. This includes bullying, name-calling and learning bad habits. A parent will protect their child from negative influences. As a result, there are fewer distractions in their development.

In summary,  I have outlined a number of pros and cons to home schooling. I feel the arguments for home schooling are overwhelming. If parents are able to optimise the learning experience for their children, this could give the future generation a head start.
