IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

The number of people who are at risk of serious health problems due to being overweight is increasing. What is the reason for the growth in overweight people in society? How can this problem be solved?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

A recent research report has concluded that there has been a tremendous increase in serious health issues among people due to obesity. In this essay, I will shed some light on the factors contributing to this problem and will also suggest some solutions for the same.

There are a plethora of reasons for the increase in the number of obese people. The ultimate reason is the advancement in technologies because nowadays people are relying more on the advanced machine to get their work done. For example, nowadays people use vacuum cleaner for cleaning their houses instead of doing it manually. It is also possible to say that consumption of junk food is also a major reason to increase this problem of obesity. For instance, a recent study has concluded that majority of children who are overweight are eating fast food like burger, pizza. Finally, although not a major cause but sedentary jobs are also a contributing factor that lead to an increase in the number of overweight people.

However, solutions are available to tackle this problem. Firstly, the government can spread health awareness through various campaigns and television programs which show the negative effects of being overweight and how to overcome these effects by doing small physical exercises at home itself without going to the gym. Another possible solution is to increase the tax on the fast food; consequently, people will consume less junk food in order to save money. To exemplify, the Kerala province in India has already passed the law imposing of hefty taxes on fast food chains like McDonald’s and Subway.

Thus, even though, obesity is a growing global problem, mainly caused by the use of the advanced machine and eating fast food, it can be prevented from worsening by spreading health awareness and increasing the tax on fast food.
