IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 with model answer

 The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Model Answer:

The line graph compares between the amounts of energy consumed from different sources in the USA and their expectation throughout a period of a half-century from 1980 to 2030 based on a 2008 report.

Firstly, it is noticeable that about 35 quadrillion units were consumed from petrol and oil in 1980, which was more than seven times the energy consumption from nuclear power, solar/wind power and hydropower in the same year. This amount showed an initial decline during the early eighties, then significantly increased to less than 45 quadrillion units by 2015 and is expected to keep rising to reach the peak of around 50 quadrillion units by 2030. Furthermore, energy consumption from coal was around 16 quadrillion units in the early 80s just under that from natural gas in 1980. However, it went up considerably until it overtakes that from natural gas by 2015 and it will continue its upward trend till it reaches 30 quadrillion units in 2030. In addition, energy consumed from natural gas was projected to around 25 quadrillion units until 2015 then it is going to a plateau to the end of the given period.

On the other hand, the units of energy consumed from nuclear power, solar/wind power, and hydropower were almost the same less than 5 quadrillion units in 1980. This amount grew slightly for both nuclear and solar/wind power and it will continue this minimal growth till becoming around 5 quadrillion units. Nevertheless, hydropower will main the same level by 2030.

To conclude it can be clearly seen that fossil fuel, particularly petrol and oil was the most popular source of energy in the USA and it will be the most common source of envy fill 2030.
