IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact 0n local inhabitants and environment. Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Model Answer:

One of the highly controversial issues today relates to the disolution of barriers between countries and the unprecedented rise in international tourism. In this essay, I am going to shed some light on the advantages and disadvantages of international tourism.

There are several benefits of international tourism. The main reason of believing this is that foreign visitors bring in to the countries they visit a lot of foreign currency which can boost the local economy. Is is also possible to say that tourism creates a great diversity which is celebrated in modern communities. One good illustration of this is the creation of new cities, like Sharm Alsheik in Egypts, which are entirely dependant on international tourism.

However, every coin has two sides and despite all the advantages of international tourism, there are some disadvantages too, that may affect the environment and the locals. Firstly it is often argued that foreign visitors may not be very keen on preserving the environment. It is also possible to say that diversity and respect for local cultures are not always mutually exclusive. For instance, you can find graffiti markings on archeological monuments in the city of Luxor in Egypt which is, of course, unacceptable to the local community.

To sum up, international tourism has several advantage and disadvantage. In my opinion, both argument have their merits. On balance. however, I tend to believe that welcoming tourist is for more beneficial than rejecting them.
