IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

'Telecommuting' refers to workers doing their jobs from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. Telecommuting is growing in many countries and is expected to be common for most office workers in the coming decades. How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

One of the highly controversial issues today relates to whether the progressive developments in communication technology will lead to an increase in the number of people who work from home for few days every week or it would have an undesirable impact on the community. I strongly agree with the former view due to several reasons that I will discuss in greater detail in my essay.

On one side of the argument there are people who argue that the drawbacks of working from home considerably outweigh its advantages. The main reason for believing this is that people working from home will miss out on plenty of opportunities to usefully interact with fellow employees and with their superiors. It is also possible to say that working from home exposes one to various distractions that can affect one’s  productivity. One good illustration of this are the new mothers working from home while at the same time taking care of their babies. Therefore, it is easy to see why this argument has gained support.

On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case. It is often argued that working from home for few days every week is truly beneficial for the individual on the personal and social levels. People often have this opinion because working online, from home, provides a stress-free environment for the employee which results in increased productivity. A second point is that working from home provides the perfect solution to avoid excessive traffic and the endless rush hours. A particularly good example here is a study conducted in Sweden that concluded that there was insignificant difference in the work outcome between two groups of employees, one group working at office versus the other, working from home. Thus, it goes without saying that this viewpoint is credible and realistic too.

After having discussed the most pertinent points of this issue, I feel that the only logical conclusion is that the advantages encountered by working partially from home outweigh their disadvantages. Hence, I am strongly inclined to support working from home, nevertheless, this must be for part of the week only.

    Hi,
I have a doubt on this essay. How can we recognize if this is opinion based essay ? and that if we need to discuss both the negative and positive sides of telecommuting.

    Dear Rabeena,

The main question in the topic is “How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting? ”. You can answer this in any of the following ways:
    1) Fully support the claim statement and write only about the positive aspects
    2) Partially support the claim statement and write about both the positive and negative aspects
    3) Fully disagree with the claim statement and write only about the negative aspects

There are no wrong answers when you are stating your opinion. However this essay scored low in TA and C&C because it fully agreed with the claim statement yet the body paragraphs discussed both sides which made it confusing.

    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Atul.
