IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

Some people believe that money is the most important factor for achieving happiness. However, others believe that happiness has nothing to do with money.

Do you agree or disagree?

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

There is no doubt that being happy is one of people's primary goals in life. While some are convinced that money is the most significant element in reaching that goal, others feel that happiness is independent of one's financial situation.  This essay will shed some light on this issue and give a reasoned opinion.

Some people are of the view that money can buy happiness this is because today's society attributes much importance to material possessions for instance, owning a house or a car are now the symbol of success and happiness in the eyes of society.

Additionally, a financially well-off individual would not need to toil hard thus not experiencing any work-related anxieties. As a result, he will be able to spend much of his time doing things that bring him joy such as travelling and holidaying.

That said, I tend to agree with those who claim that happiness is not entirely dependent on one's financial situation. The reason being that happiness can even be achieved by people with very limited means. To illustrate, volunteer work results in people having a sense of purpose and value which ultimately brings them joy. In my opinion, money is but one of the many factors which contribute to a person's happiness. In other words, money allows an individual to satisfy his basic needs, failing which he would feel miserable.

In conclusion, whilst some are of the opinion that money is the most crucial factor in achieving happiness. I believe that there are some equally important elements which generate joy.
