Model Answer:

There are variety of sectors that utilize animal testing techniques. While some people feel this is an important part of testing the safety of a product, many are opposed to the harm caused to animals on ethical grounds. I feel animal testing should be avoided.

One of the most heart wrenching justifications used for animal testing is in the medical field. Many people would find it difficult to argue the life of a mouse is more valuable than that of a child. This type of scenario is often used to make animal testing palatable. However, I would argue animals are very different to humans. As a result, findings from animal experiments may not correlate to the same findings with humans. An example of this is the thalidomide scandal. In the U.K. pregnant woman were given a drug that was trialled safely initially on animals. This resulted in a number of fetal abnormalities in many children. This demonstrates that animal testing can not be used to predict the effect of drugs on humans accurately. Testing drugs on consenting volunteers is a more accurate way of finding the true effect of a medicine.

Another field in which animal testing has been widespread is the cosmetics industry. While some may feel safer knowing their lipstick has been safely tested on hamsters, I cannot think of a more frivolous reason to cause cruelty to animals. An example of a thriving cosmetics brand that does not partake in this form of torture is the Body Shop. The Body Shop is a successful world-wide brand with the slogan "Against animal testing."

In summary, I am against animal testing for many reasons. I feel it is an abuse of weaker creatures that is avoidable.
